Scope note
Numeric, alphanumeric, or other identifying codes assigned when an art object, book, or other item is described or listed in a catalog, usually a published catalog. An example is an exhibition catalog. The numbers are typically not marked on the object itself. For numbers given to objects when they are acquired by a repository, prefer "accession numbers."
